Absolutely Incredible Antique French Psyche Clock and Vase Set. This is sculpted of the finest bronze with gilt overlay. In Greek mythology, Psyche was the deification of the human soul. She was portrayed in ancient mosaics as a goddess with butterfly wings (because psyche is also the Greek word for 'butterfly'). The Greek word psyche literally means "spirit, breath, life or animating force".

Signed Matt. Moreau. Born in Dijon in the early 19th century, he studied under Mathurin Moreau. Auguste Moreau worked as a sculptor and specialised in figures, statuettes and groups, mainly in marble. He made his debut at the 1861 Salon in Paris and continued to play an active part in the Salon des Artistes Francais as a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais until 1910.

Psyche was originally the youngest daughter of the king and queen of Sicily, and the most beautiful person on the island. Suitors flocked to ask for her hand. She eventually boasted that she was more beautiful than Aphrodite (Venus) herself, and Aphrodite sent Eros to transfix her with an arrow of desire, to make her fall in love with the nearest person or thing available. But even Eros (Cupid) fell in love with her, and took her to a secret place, eventually marrying her and having her made a goddess by Zeus (Jupiter).

Until Recently this incredible interpretation of God's most beautiful creation hung over the bed of a very prominent executive and art lover. We are so fortunate the have this fabulous relief sculpture by Bill Mack in our Gallery. For those who have followed the American Contemporary Art Movement over the last 20 years or so, Bill Mack needs no introduction. For those unfamiliar with his work, Bill Mack sculpts in what is referred to as “alto-relief,” which is a variation of bas-relief but incorporates even much greater depth and three dimensionality with portions of sculptures rendered in the “full round,” similar to classic Greek and Roman sculpture and statuary. Isn't she spectacular? Bill is known all around the world, his pieces are in the collections of US execs like Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton, famous actors like Sylvester Stallone and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as many corporate titans and heads of industry. Specific pieces of his have been enshrined permanently in American landmarks such as his sculpture now part of the permanent collection of the Statute of Liberty National Monument on Liberty Island. He has several other pieces at various important pro sports related venues, such as his Peggy Fleming statue at the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame, and his Lyle Alzado statue at the NFL Hall of Fame. The current piece we are offering for sale is titled “Tranquility.” It is an early work from 1994 and without a doubt, is one of his finest pieces ever.
