Born in Aberdeen Scotland, Coutts left home at an early age to live a life of studying, traveling and painting all over the world. He trained at the Melbourne National Gallery School in Australia, the Royal Art School of London, and finally the Académie Julian in Paris. After his education, Coutts travel to Mexico, Spain and Morocco. However, he continued to travel the American West & Mexico were Tahoe & Taxco were his favorite painting locations.
Coutts’ paintings mirror the diverse cultures he encountered during his travels. Yet, he is best known for his desert and mountain landscapes, as well as his figurative work. Gordon sometimes used watercolor and pastel, but the overwhelming number of his works, and he was prolific, were in oils such as this one.
Acclaimed during his lifetime, Coutts exhibited at the Sacramento Exhibition where he was awarded a gold medal. Additionally, his works were displayed at the Paris Salon in 1913 and the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915, among various other places.

Born in the town of Calci, in the Tuscan region of Italy, Armani, like many children, loved to draw, and he was remarkably adept at photo-realistic art. His father, realizing his son’s gift, enrolled the boy in the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Giuseppe Armani was a talented artist who created a great many extravagant figurines and statues in a variety of styles. For much of his life he designed numerous works for the Florence Sculpture d’Arte ranging from charming Capodimonte styled figurines to sculptures that featured a more modern, contemporary styling. Stylish and romantic, the striking figurines designed by Giuseppe Armani are true works of art in porcelain, produced by a master. The impeccable detailing of these pieces, particularly in the draping and folds of clothing, is reminiscent of the great works of painters and sculptors of the Italian Renaissance. In later years he gained much acclaim for his collection of Disney figurines which depicted many of Disney’s most beloved characters. Giuseppe’s artistic creations continue to be hugely popular with collectors.

The Comte d’Artois, a brother of Louis XVI who survived the French Revolution and acceded to the throne in 1824, was crowned Charles X. Although his reign was brief (he abdicated in 1830), his era was significant in terms of productivity and design.
Twenty years before he came into power, when Napoleon had himself declared Emperor of France in 1804, the plain and simple furniture of the Directoire period began again to exhibit the 18th-century French love of luxury. The architects of this fashion were Charles Percier and P.F.L. Fontaine, in association with the painter Jacques-Louis David. The Empire style, as it was known, was taken from the Roman Empire.
